Cooking With Cannabis
Cannabis tea is a delicious, soothing beverage that can be made with cannabutter or fresh cannabis trim. Not only does it make a great, smoke-free way to enjoy the effects of cannabis, but tea made using trim is non-intoxicating, making it ideal for those looking to use cannabis without the psychoactive buzz.
Cannabis tea is, you guessed, a hot beverage infused with cannabis. There are a couple of different ways to make cannabis tea, the simplest of which just involves steeping cannabis leaves or flowers in hot water. Some growers choose to do this with the fan and sugar leaves they trim away from their plants at harvest time. Alternatively, you can use cannabis oil or butter.
Cannabis tea made with cannabutter or oil that contains THC will get you high. Cannabis tea made with cannabis plant material that has not been decarboxylated and infused into a fatty base, however, won't; that's because raw cannabis contains THCA—not THC, and because cannabinoids (particularly THC) aren't water-soluble.
Cannabis tea, like other teas, is delicious and soothing. When made with cannabutter, cannabis tea also serves as a great way to get high and enjoy the other benefits of cannabinoids. Below, you'll find a few simple recipes for making cannabis tea at home.
Ingredients:
• Cannabutter
• 1 bag of your favourite tea: You can essentially infuse any type of tea with cannabutter/oil, but we recommend combining it with caffeine-free herbal infusions.
• Honey, sugar, or sweetener (optional)
• Milk (optional)
Equipment:
• Teacup or mug
• Kettle
How much cannabis you put in your tea depends on the strength of your cannabutter, your tolerance, and the desired effect you're looking for. In general, we recommend using between ¼–1 teaspoon of medium-strength cannabutter per cup of tea. However, feel free to use more or less to suit your preferences and tolerance.
1. Boil water in a kettle, then let it cool for 1–2 minutes. If you have a kettle with a thermometer, heat your water to roughly 85–90°C.
2. Put your tea bag and cannabutter in a teacup.
3. Pour in the hot water and stir until the butter has fully dissolved.
4. Let the tea steep for roughly 2 minutes.
5. Add milk and honey or other sweeteners to taste, and enjoy.
Drinking chai lattes doesn't have to be reserved for hip cafes—you can also make them at home with ease! Plus, using the recipe below, you can spice up your chai latte even further!
Ingredients:
• 1 cup of the milk of your choosing (soy and almond work great for this recipe)
• 4 cardamom pods
• 2 black peppercorns
• ¼ tbsp allspice
• 1 cinnamon stick
• ½ star anise
• 2 cloves
• 1 teabag of Ceylon tea (or an equivalent amount of loose-leaf Ceylon)
• 1 slice of fresh ginger
• Cannabutter
• Honey or sugar to taste
Equipment:
• Mason jar or heat-proof dish
• Water bath/bain-marie
• Frying pan
• Cheesecloth, strainer, or coffee filter
• Teacup or mug
• Milk frother (optional)
1. Toast all of your dry spices in a frying pan over medium heat. Be sure to constantly move the spices to keep them from burning. This process takes roughly 4–5 minutes; you'll know your spices are ready when your kitchen smells nice and fragrant.
2. Add your toasted spices, cannabutter, Ceylon tea, milk, and fresh ginger into a Mason jar or heatproof dish.
3. Preheat the water bath to just under boiling (or 85°C if you have a thermometer).
4. Cover the Mason jar or heat-proof dish and place it in the water bath. Infuse for 20–60 minutes (the longer you infuse the tea, the better it will taste).
5. Remove from the water bath and strain the beverage into a teacup/mug.
6. If you have a milk frother, feel free to froth your chai to give it that cafe-like texture.
7. Sweeten to taste with your favourite sweetener.
8. Serve hot with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.
Last but not least, you can also make cannabis tea using stems and leaves you trimmed from your harvested cannabis plants. Granted, it might not get you high, but it still makes for a delicious, soothing beverage and allows you to reduce the waste produced by your cannabis grows.
Ingredients:
• 1 tbsp cannabis trim (dry or fresh) per cup
• Sugar or sweetener (optional)
• Milk (optional)
Equipment:
• Kettle
• Teacup or mug
• Bowl
1. Boil water in a kettle.
2. Let it cool for 1–2 minutes.
3. Add your trim to a bowl.
4. Pour your hot water into the cup, stir, and let it steep for 2–3 minutes.
5. Strain the tea into a teacup or mug, and enjoy!
Ready to relax? Pour yourself a soothing cup of homemade cannabis tea and settle in to relax out in nature or at home. Remember that tea made with cannabutter is intoxicating, while tea made with cannabis trim that hasn’t been decarboxylated isn’t, so choose which recipe to use based on your preference.
