Fortunately, the chances of Christie becoming the Republican presidential nominee are slim, but it doesn’t change the fact that he currently holds a podium to spread his lies to the world. A recent example was the Republican debate, where cannabis legalisation came up as a topic. Christie, despite being known as a fierce opponent of cannabis in all its forms, lied and said he supported medical marijuana. This is from a man who said he would undo all the progress made so far, and ensure that federal agencies resumed their raids of medical dispensaries.
It is a lie that many have realised, including Dr Sanjay Gupta, one of the leading figureheads of the fight for legal medical weed in the US. He went on CNN and did a bit of fact-checking about what Mr Christie had to say.
Fortunately, not all Republican candidates are as backwards as Christie, and candidates like Rand Paul, Jeb Bush, and Carly Fiorina have said they would allow states to decide for themselves – without the risk of federal intervention in any form. So it is not all doom and gloom; chances are Christie won’t get into power, and one of his more open minded rivals will. Let’s just hope the current platform he has doesn’t cause too much damage through the spread of ignorance!
